The traditional definition of neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships. Neuropsychologists specialize in assessing and treating cognitive and emotional needs of patients suffering from neurological or psychological conditions or disorders. Neuropsychologists recognize the importance of both the neurological and the psychological in behavior. Neuropsychologists are professionals (Ph.D.) trained in the specialized assessment of cognitive functions for the purpose of identifying patterns that signify brain disorders. The evaluation process consists of an interview and then a formal administration of various tests focused on memory, attention, language, etc. After the evaluation, the neuropsychologist provides education to the patient and family about the symptoms and how to manage them. Initial appointment typically lasts 3-5 hours. A report is sent to the referring physician to communicate findings and recommendations.
